Juventura's 4-P Leadership Project Juventura's Mission To empower Latino youth through multicultural art/sport, cultural competence and education. 4-P Leadership Model of Juventura We have designed a culturally based model of leadership that Latino youth can use as reference to accomplish their dreams and to succeed in the US. We believe that by finding the right resources and a positive, meaningful and compelling goal, any youth can become a positive leader, regardless the race, level of English/Spanish skills, legal status, etc. We also believe that youth leaders are not necessarily the ones who speak out loud and/or have gained more popularity (it only shows a type of leadership skill.) We believe that youth leaders can also act silently. Now, any youth leader (whether he/she is a silent leader or not), has to develop awareness and competence in the following 4 areas: Communication, Self-esteem, Positive Actions and Cultural Norms. How does our model work? By encouraging compelling and meaningful youth projects (trips, camps, party, art/sport/social/community projects) By facilitating popular youth education (redesign your life in a new country, self-esteem development, improved communication, sense of identity, cultural competence, goal accomplishment, academic achievement, positive leadership.) By mentoring (members of the community, Juventura's volunteers, UW volunteers) Plan of Accomplishment -Setting regular meetings with ordinary members of the community (individuals, youth groups, parents groups, volunteer groups.) Our meetings will focus on youth needs, interests, and upcoming projects. The youth leadership group will meet on Date___________________Time______________________. The parents group will meet on Date___________________Time______________________. The mentors/volunteers will meet on Date___________________Time______________________. -Promoting challenging and culturally based youth projects. Project planning are facilitated during the regular meetings (example of projects are art and/or sport events, educational workshops, community service activities, recreational plans -trips, parties, festivals-.) Short term and long term projects are promoted, to ensure a high level of enthusiasm and participation throughout the time, to build long term relationship and cultivate positive and lasting leadership habits in our youth community. -Meeting regularly with school staff, volunteers/mentors and parents (to discuss youth progress and also the adult active participation as mentors, role models, etc) More details about the involvement Student Involvement As we said before, we strongly believe that by finding the right resources and a positive, meaningful and compelling goal, any youth can become a positive leader. We also said that there are different types of leaders, and lots of them can be silent leaders. So, though any youth can participate in our model of leadership, and though anyone can be a potentially successfull leader, to commit in the 4-P Model we propose, all youth need to take part of the following: -To get involved in a very positive and compelling project (meaningful for the youth.) Commitment toward that project has to last at least 6 months (up to one year.) Also, the youth have to show intention to successfully finish that particular project (youth can change projects, if they want, but would need to show interest and commitment toward the new one. Mentors and volunteers will help the youth with strategic planning to accomplish the project. -Participate in our upcoming educational activities (camps, popular education workshops, trips, etc) -To show interest in academic development (finishing home work, working regularly with a mentor) -To attend set meetings (meetings with mentors, volunteers, other youth) Parent Involvement -To support their youth in any positive and compelling project they decide to start (the support has to be throughout the 6 months (up to one year) the project last, and until it gets done. If there is any reason they would not able to provide support, they have to bring that situation up to the parents meetings and/or talk to staff/mentors/volunteers/Juventura's director (kind of support: transportation, rides, money, expertise, emotional, etc) -Participate in our upcoming educational activities (popular education workshops, parent groups, etc) Including an informational session about the Model of Leadership we are about to develop. -To support their youth in the academic development (at finishing home works, at working regularly with their youth's academic mentor) -To attend set meetings (meetings with mentors, volunteers, youth, staff) Community Involvement (any community member: mentors, leaders, parents, etc) -To support youth and parents in any positive and compelling project they decide to start (the support has to be throughout the 6 months (up to one year.) the project last, and until it gets done. -Participate in an informational session about the Model of Leadership we are about to develop. -To support youth in their academic development (at finishing home works, at working regularly with their youth's academic mentor) -To attend set meetings (meetings with other mentors, volunteers, youth, parents, staff) -To connect to other regular people and leaders in the community. Note: we will make emphasis on recruiting leaders and role models who are very attractive to youth, not necessarily based on their titles, status and/or employment positions. So, though we -the mentors, volunteers, parents, staff- are the ones who facilitate the whole process, we will always base our recruitment process on previous discussions with the youth, and will strongly consider their point of view. School Staff Involvement (educators, social workers, ESL, counselors, principals, etc) -To offer institutional and personal support to the youth and the community (parents and volunteers/mentors) during any project they decide to start (until it gets done.) -Participate in an informational session about the Model of Leadership we are about to develop. -To send key members of the staff to set meetings (meetings with other mentors, volunteers, youth, parents, staff) -To support in any way any activity may take place outside of the school setting (camps, parties, trips, workshops, etc) -To check youth progress in any youth project. -To check youth progress in any academic performance. -To offer academic credits for the accomplishment during youth involvement in the Juventura's Leadership Model. |
